Objective

Demonstrate your knowledge of both OpEds and Review Writing by reviewing someone else's OpEd.

Procedure

  1. Log into VoiceThread and check out the posted OpEds
  2. Choose one to review
  3. Watch the OpEd many times, paying attention to the following essential questions:
    1. What is the author's opinion? How clear is it?
    2. What how does the author support their opinion? How convincing is this support?
    3. What styles and techniques is the author using? What do you think about them?
    4. How do the author's editing choices affect this OpEd? Do they contribute or detract from the OpEd in any significant way?
    5. How are the technical aspects of this OpEd (camerawork, lighting, audio, etc.)? Do they contribute or detract from the OpEd in any significant way?
    6. What are the great things about this OpEd?
    7. What could use improvement in this OpEd?
    8. What about this OpEd is unique or really stands out?
    9. What adjectives come to mind when you look at this OpEd?
    10. What does this OpEd tell you about the author?
  4. Take notes on your answers to the questions.
  5. Complete your review.

Differentiation

You have two options for completing your review.
  1. You may write a one-page typed double-spaced review. It should be at least 500 words. You will submit this review via School Loop.
  2. You may give a video blog review. It should be at least 10 minutes long. You will submit this review via Voicethread.

Evaluation

Your review will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • The content that you cover.
  • The amount of descriptive detail you use.
  • The balancing of fact and opinion.
  • Supporting your opinions with specific and accurate examples.
  • Including both positive and negative aspects of the OpEd.
  • Entertainment value and style.
